Michael Gaillard lives and works in Brooklyn and Nantucket. Gaillard holds degrees from Stanford University (BA, 2003) and Columbia University (MFA, 2010), and since graduating has had numerous solo exhibitions in New York, California, and Nantucket.
All of the work in the LOCATION section of this website is produced using his 8x10 film camera (pictured here). While he doesn't believe this to be conceptually relevant, use of this technology is necessary to achieve the unrivaled clarity and realism that his practice demands. The images he produces with this camera allow him to reproduce the images at tremendous scale (72 x 90 inches) without compromising quality, thus achieving the desired immersive atmospheric effects. Even images taken with the highest resolution digital cameras still pale in comparison to the level of detail achievable using an 8x10 film camera and a drum scanner. A Nantucket native based in New York since 2003, he lives in Park Slope, Brooklyn with his wife Brett, and two sons, Sam (5) and Max (2).
Gaillard’s artwork can be viewed daily during the summer season in his Nantucket art gallery (Michael Gaillard Studio, 2 S. Beach St.) and by appointment throughout the rest of the year at both his Nantucket and Brooklyn studios.
Upcoming exhibitions and new works will be announced on the website and social media as well as in the artist newsletter.
